Oregon

The First Day!

June 6, 1994

Dave (left) and Babak (right) roll the back wheels or their bicycles into the pacific ocean on a typical (i.e. rainy) day in Oregon. Needle and Haystack (those two big rocks) can be seen in the background.

A Yurt ??

After biking for two days in the rain we were happy to find a Yurt at Cape Look Out State Park. This half-tent half-cabin kept us nice and dry.

The Oregon Coast

Our view of the Oregon coast during the first four days of our ride. On June 9th, we cut inland at Florence and began our journey east.

Mom's Pies

Just past the town of Nimrod (population 3) we found the village cafe which served some of the best pies we've ever had. Everyone who has been to this cafe has left their business card pinned to the ceiling. We wrote our names on a napkin. Can you find ours?

The First Real Climb......

The road up Mckenzie Pass offered us an excellent view of the Oregon Cascade Mountain Range. Yes that's snow on the road!

Is that Peter Pan?

Actually it's Dave (holding the banana peel) and Babak after getting to the top of McKenzie Pass.

A Change Of Scenery

As soon as we came down the other side of the cascades the landscape changed dramatically. The Oregon Cascades separate the plush Willamette Valley from the very dry Eastern part of Oregon. Dave's bike shown above.

The Town of Mitchel

Mitchel (population 180) used to be a big center of trade for minors and prospectors. The locals say that the town has been destroyed many times by flash-flooding. We had breakfast in the Blueberry Cafe. There many interesting people here including a prospector and some other crazy bicyclists.

The Mega-Tent

To give you an idea of how big this tent is, that's a 100 pound dog (named "Moo") you're looking at. We met a couple who wanted to take their dogs (2) with them on a bicycle tour so they had special carts built to tow them along with the rest their stuff. They were towing over 300 pounds each...we met them after they had given up their bikes for a car.
Going up and down the three summits of the Blue Mountains was the only time we hated going down hill. We had to keep our hands in front of our faces to block the hail. It was so cold that at the bottom of the descents we could not move our fingers. Our planned lunch stop was a town that no longer existed so we just stood inside a vacant post-office trying to warm up eating whatever left over food we had with us. Babak had a little pasta to eat - I had to eat peanut butter out of a jar.
Later that day we went to the McEwan Country store to recooperate from the Blue Mountains and ate lunch with the 2 Yaks that belonged to the store owners.

Yaks!

Baker City

On June 15th, We took our first day off from biking to relax and explore Baker City, Oregon.

Santa Claus?

No - it's Dallas McKennon, he did the animal voices in some of the Disney cartoons. Now he does shows at the Oregon Trail Theater in Baker City.

Cows and Cowboys

Before getting out of Oregon we had to navigate through a herd of cows blocking the road..
